Modelling changes in soil structure caused by livestock treading

چکیده

Increased soil compaction resulting from livestock treading and use of heavy machinery is a major environmental hazard often linked to degradation the ecosystem economic services. However, there weak quantitative understanding spatial temporal extent how it modifies properties associated functions. To address this challenge, we developed framework for systematic modelling caused by grazing animals. We considered random movement in confined field describe variation that discretized square cells with given properties. then used rheology model based on Bingham’s law infer compaction-induced changes bulk density porosity. An reduction saturated hydraulic conductivity obtained porosity predictions empirically accounting macroporosity using dual-porosity permeability model. This coupled an empirical structure recovery account biological activity (i.e., earthworms roots). The effectively captures primary effects key despite lack explicit consideration complex such as redistribution pore sizes connectivity. tested density, data study at Tussock Creek experimental platform New Zealand. Data were successfully reproduced Compaction trends can be interpreted terms management, texture conditions. If are available calibration properties, could agro-ecosystem applications assess impacts (such surface runoff green-house gas emissions) livestock-grazing systems inform management strategies ameliorating these.

Modelling to analyse the impacts of animal treading effects on soil infiltration

Animal treading can change soil physical properties, and thus is an important factor in hydrological modelling. We investigated the impacts of animal treading on infiltration by using a series of rainfall simulation experiments at Whatawhata Research Center, Waikato, New Zealand. The study identified significant variables for estimating soil steady-state infiltration at a microsite (0Ð5 m2) and...

Soil-structure Interface Modelling: Influence of Impregnation

Information on the influence of impregnation of cementitious slurry at the soil-structure interface of bored cast in-situ foundation is inadequate in available literatures. Moreover, influence of such impregnation on negating the detrimental effects of smear zone, formed by construction tools, surrounding the borehole is also unknown. In classical foundation engineering, influences of smear and...

Behavioral and Personality Changes Caused by Toxoplasma: Imagination or Reality

Introduction: This note addresses the scientific study of behavioral changes caused by Toxoplasma. About a third of the world's population is infected with the chronic form of the parasite, which is usually asymptomatic and causes severe symptoms only in the presence of the parasite in the eye and nervous system. The study of behavioral changes caused by this parasite has begun since the 1980s ...

Carnivore-caused livestock mortality in Trans-Himalaya.

The loss of livestock to wild predators is an important livelihood concern among Trans-Himalayan pastoralists. Because of the remoteness and inaccessibility of the region, few studies have been carried out to quantify livestock depredation by wild predators. In the present study, we assessed the intensity of livestock depredation by snow leopard Uncia uncia, Tibetan wolf Canis lupus chanku, and...
